How do I sign up?

Enter your name and email address in the boxes and click sign up. You will then be sent a confirmation email welcoming you. If you have not already signed up with FSC  e.g. to receive the email newsletter you will have to click on the link within the email to complete the sign-up process.

Our priorities in 2013 will be

• to ensure that the big changes in school exams, funding for poorer children and teacher training don’t prevent young people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to experience the outside world.
• widening opportunities, for example by continuing to take a lead in developing fieldwork in our town and cities and working towards fulfilling our vision to develop the world’s first inner city residential field centre in the Olympic Park.
• lobbying hard to make sure all of this happens.

But the inspirational outdoor experiences in our iconic centres and stunning locations will remain at the heart of what we do.

Automatic Weather Station

As a local resident of Carleton in Craven and weather enthusiast, Lee Schofield has recently set up a new automatic weather station at Malham Tarn. This is a very exciting addition to the daily manual weather observations, already recorded at our Met Pen. The below information, which has been written by Lee, explains the weather network he has already set up. We would like to take the opportunity to thank Lee, for installing the weather station at the Tarn.

Lee Schofield said ''The automatic weather station at Malham Tarn forms part of my expanding network of remote observation sites situation at various points across The Yorkshire Dales & Skipton area.

The weather stations records Air temperature, Relative humidity, rainfall, wind speed and direction, wind chill, dew point and air pressure along with 24hr maximum and minimum observations.

There are 19 observation sites currently in  operation all uploading data via the internet to my website http://www.thelocalweather.co.uk/  I have plans to expand the network further over the coming months with new weather stations planned in Wensleydale at Askrigg and at Howgill close to Burnsall in Upper Wharfedale.

The whole network is funded and maintained by myself as a service to locals and those planning a day out in the area.

I also upload to Facebook & Twitter a 24hour weather forecast for the area each day this can be seen on Facebook by following Craven Weather or on twitter @craven weather.''

A very snowy March

Well after a very snowy weekend, groups finally managed to escape. Cheshunt and Sutton High changed their plan but still carried out a very productive few days to prepare the students for their AS skills and Core paper exam.

People and the Dales Project

The People and the Dales Project, makes the Yorkshire Dales more accessible to people who may not normally have had the chance to visit the beautiful scenery here. The FSC has an ongoing collaboration with the project, and you can follow the link to see the benefit that this scheme has on people involved.

Red Nose Day Bake Off

As it's Red Nose Day, staff have pulled out all the stops to create some amazing cakes to be sold to staff and students to raise money for Comic Relief. Lets hope they are as yummy as they look!

 

High Stables Common Room Renovations

For the last couple of weeks High Stables Common Room has been undergoing renovations. The area previously consisted of a horseshoe shaped room, with the bar occupying the middle section. There was also a first floor mezzanine that had limited use due to it's size, and therefore was rarely used.

The bar has now been moved into what was the common room toilet area, opening up the whole room to make it a much more usable space. The mezzanine floor has been extended into a full 1^st floor, doubling the floor area upstairs.

When the renovations are complete the space will be more versatile, allowing it to be used as an extra teaching space and comfortable area for the residents of High Stables. A flatscreen tv is being installed for recreational activities and as a media outlet for slideshows to be used for adult, University or school groups.  A drinks station is also being installed to allow tea and coffee on demand.

Yorkshire Dales on 'Wild Things'

The Yorkshire Dales has featured on one of the latest episodes of the Wild Things programme on Channel 4. This episode features the very rare Lady Slipper orchid, of which Malham Tarn has it's very own growing for the public to see.

Good Luck Corinne and Becky

Recently two tutors at Malham have found permanent positions at other FSC centres. Becky Casson moved a couple of months ago to Snowdonia to Rhyd-y-creuau. This week Corinne Cox has moved to Juniper Hall in Surrey.

We wish them both luck in their new adventures with the FSC, and they are always welcome to come visit.

New Blue Crayfish

We have a a beautiful new adult White Claw Crayfish in our tanks. She is bright blue in colour which is very rare and thought to be a recessive genetic trait.

As part of their life cycle between May and October Crayfish need to moult their shell to grow. Overnight our crayfish has shed her exoskeleton which is left in the tank and she is an even brighter blue than normal.

Bat Rescue

Over the weekend staff at the centre noticed a bat clinging onto a main wall in the daytime. If a bat has been out in daylight and not moved The Bat Conservation Trust (BCT) website had useful information on how to move the bat. (Remember you need a license to handle bats, and need to use gloves as they can transmit rabies though scratches and bites.) The advice said to put a shoe box over the bat and slip cardboard between the wall and box to ease the bat into the box.  Then we added something warm into the box for the bat to lie under, and a small amount of water in a bottle top.

The BCT have a helpline to call so the bat can be taken by volunteers to rehabilitate it and hopefully release back into the wild again. Our bat was taken by the East Lancashire Bat Group, and once fed up a bit should be healthy to be released again at Malham.

Strawberries

Summer has not really made it as far as the Tarn, however our summer strawberries are doing well and look like a tasty treat to eat soon. Planted in old wellingtons in the courtyard they have started to ripen in the short sunny spells.
